Using Ha and Wa in Hiragana Before studying Japanese greetings, its important to learn how two important words are used in hiragana. Hiragana is a part of the Japanese writing system. Impressions Of Renaissance Art Essay Art has gone through many phases throughout history. As times have changed, so have the manner and style of artists and their art. During the Middle Ages, Europe suffered a widespread horrific disease called the Black Death which killed one-fourth to one-third of the population. After the Middle Ages came a period of change called the Renaissance, which means the rebirth, came to life in Florence and eventually spread throughout the rest of Europe. The Renaissance was reforming many things such as art in general, literature, science, drama, and many more areas of expression. During this period, European citizens turned to artwork as relief from the horrible past experiences such as the Black Death. Symbolic representation in paintings became a thing of the past, as many artists moved to realistic representation. This change in art was caused by a move of scientific worldview of reason, and scientific exploration of the human body. Along with that, many other artistic concepts were introduced such as: chiaroscuro, proportions, pyramid configuration, oil paints, and linear perspective. The Lamentation by Lucas Cranach the Elder, and The Crucifixion and Last Judgment by JanVan Eyck, both embody many of the new Renaissance art styles which reflect the changing sentiments of European culture. Born in Maaseick, Limbourg, Jan Van Eyck was known to be the most celebrated painter in fifteenth-century Europe. Although he was credited with inventing painting with oils, which is incorrect, he was the first to use oil paint to his advantage, making illusions of light, vivid oil colors, and microscopic detail. He was known to have perfected this technique. The Crucifixion and Last Judgment was painted in the 1430s, and when I saw this painting it caught my eye because of the way he presents it. The painting is split in half; on the left there is The Crucifixion and on the right there is The Last Judgment. The concentration of these paintings all seem to be centered on Christ by using pyramidal composition. Pyramidal composition was the idea that objects are placed on the foreground of the scene and other objects are placed further and further behind, which creates an illusion of depth while drawing the focal point to the center of the paper. After studying the painting it is remarkable how much detail and information he put on the small canvas he had. The Crucifixion was painted to show Jesus and the story of his death. At first glance, it looked to me as if it was a simple painting of Christ being crucified and many people around him simply watching it. As I stood there and tried to examine the finer details, it took me a while because I never actually examined an artwork to this extent. I soon began to see the intricate details Van Eyck made, and how he incorporated some of the new styles that were founded in the Renaissance in his painting. If you look closely, you can see the very detailed castles and structures in the background. I then noticed the cloud formation and the mountains in the horizon. I was amazed at this, because when closely examined it looks completely real. This was made possible by the introduction of linear perspective, one of the most influential advancements made in art. Linear perspective entails making lines converge at a vanishing point, while having objects in the painting appear to retreat in the distance. This creates an illusion of depth, and makes it so there is an illusion of three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface. One of the last things I saw that I found most impressive was the amount of detail Van Eyck put into the people and animals at the bottom half of The Crucifixion. As said before, at first glance it only appeared as if many people were gathering around to view Christs death, and when I first looked I could not make out the expression on their faces. As I looked closer, the expression on each face was remarkable. Van Eyck puts a completely different facial expression on each person. Seeing this, I realized that there were not only a group of people who watched Christs death with satisfaction, but there were in fact a number of people mourning his death. It seems that the mourners were at the bottom of the painting, which from the perspective of the eye witness, would be closer to him/her. The clear and present agony was evident as the subjects being portrayed responded to the situation that was being presented. Marriage In The Renaissance Era Essay ThesisIn the painting, Saint John is holding Jesus head up, Nicodemus holds Mary Magdalenes ointment jar while she bends down to kiss Jesus hand wound, Joseph of Arimathca holds the crown of thorns, while the Virgin Mary glances at Jesus corpse (Fazio, 38). Whats so incredible about this painting is the realness that is portrayed. To achieve this, Cranach used five techniques, three of which were mentioned before; chiaroscuro, pyramidal composition, and linear perspective. Chiaroscuro is used in this painting to create shadows and show the source of light. The light seems to be coming from behind the figures, particularly in the middle to right corner of the painting. This is used to create shadows on the characters, and in turn makes certain characteristics such as clothing seem real. When a viewer looks at this painting, they will see and think that Jesus is the main focus of this painting, however there are other people in it. This was done by the way Cranach utilizes pyramidal composition. Jesus is in the foreground, and objects are placed strategically further into the painting to create depth, while still maintaining focus on Jesus. This is similar to Linear Perspective, where Cranach places Jesus in front, and others further back of the scene. His vanishing point is more towards the center of the painting rather then a certain side. The difference between linear perspective and pyramidal composition is that linear perspective doesnt necessarily have to draw a focal point to the center of the painting. Contrapposto pose, which is a technique used that dates back to the ancient Greeks, is a shift of weight to one side, and is used to make the painting appear to be a real situation. By using contrapposto pose, it makes the characters look as if they are responding to the situation that is presented, making it look real. Like Van Eyck, Cranach focuses in on the detail of facial and body expressions. Combined with contrapposto pose, it makes it so a viewer of the painting can feel the anguish of the subjects painted, who are responding to Christs death. Typical of Cranachs mature manner are the paintings high emotional drama, intense palette, and mannered elegance (Fazio, 38). During this time of Renaissance art, the Protestant Reformation was also occurring. The church had been losing power over members of society, since the late Middle Ages when the whole culture and ethos revolved around church. Because of this, artists were able to express themselves more and paint religious scenes more freely and with less censorship. Cranach took advantage of this, and used real life proportions on every character in his painting. Until the Renaissance, many artists would embellish Gods, heros, kings, and many select individuals to look superhuman and take precedence over all other people. Cranach does not do so however, and shows Jesus as a mere mortal. He is portrayed as weak, fragile and almost helpless. He was able to depict Jesus freely and as he wanted to, which would never have been allowed before the Renaissance. The increasing separation of the Church from the state allowed for a more advanced expression of art. The paintings The Crucifixion and Last Judgment by Jan Van Eyck, and The Lamentation by Lucas Cranach the Elder, both are perfect examples of Renaissance art. The Renaissance brought upon many new styles to the art realm, which usually portrayed the change Europeans were having in their cultures. Both paintings are examples of how there was a shift from symbolism to realism from pre-Renaissance to the Renaissance on. They also represent many Europeans interest in observation and the exploration of reality. These paintings affected my appreciation of not only Renaissance art, but art as a whole, because it helped me understand how art can be used as communication, and how many paintings were reflections of the current time they were being painted in.

They went outside to see what was happening and instead of a fighter jet, it was a 100 tonne landslide coming towards two of the lodges. Down a 40-degree slope and into the 4 story Carinya lodge pushing it 100 metres downhill into the Bimbadeen lodge. He survived 65 hours trapped under 2 metres of cement slabs from the lodges. A map of Thredbo Village from 1965 clearly showed there had already been a serious landslide in that area. Ms McColl, QC, assisting the coroner, said there had been 4 serious landslides over 20 years. She also said that the land around the lodges would remain stable only if kept dry and yet a water pipe line was built with no apparent permission. It is said that the landslide consisted of one of the lodges being built on unstable ground, as was the main road, Alpine Way. But the most likely, a leaky water pipe had triggered the slide. Reports by Thredbo Rangers and engineers had already warned the unstability of the land, while special geological devices had detected movement months before the slide had occurred. In 1984 a company called Kosciusko Thredbo Pty. Ltd. began digging a trench along Alpine Way with the intention of installing a water pipe. Interpretation of Yellow The short story â€Å"Yellow by Peter Carry Is about being Insecure and how lack of self- esteem can lead a person to suicide. It Is also about changing as a person by gathering enough courage to do It. The story revolves around the mall character Jon, a second-string writer on a London listings magazine, who has been forced on a learn-to-scuba-dive trip in Egypt. Jon is an insecure, overweight man with no willpower, pushing forty and dealing with a midlife crisis. There are also two minor characters in the story, Beret the scuba diving instructor and Brian the other student n Beret's group.The story is told over a few days and mainly takes place in the ocean, the diving school and his hotel, though the hotel is used for nothing more than drinking liquor. The story is told by an omniscient third person narrator that gives us a better impression of Son's way of thinking so we can tell why he in the end chooses to drown himself. Jon is lonely on the trip, the editor didn't pay for his girlfriend to come with him and he Is envious of the other student Brian. â€Å"But he envied Brian his calm, the methodical way he assembled and clambered Into the ear. † (p. 1, l. 9-20) Brian Is a calm, methodical person who Is In control of his own life, unlike Jon. He is sick and tired of his life and tries to drink his misery away but even the alcohol is not on his side, â€Å" He poured more gin, but no matter how much he swallowed it was never enough. † (p. 1, l. 57). In the end, he could only numb his pain by drinking water. Jon actually clings to life at one point, refusing to die. â€Å"Beret grabbed him and thrust in a mouthpiece just before Jon broke the surface, gasping for life, clawing in air. † (p. 3, l. 99-100). This shows that he is not completely ready to let go of his life, even though having contemplated suicide a number of times.He finally transform in the end, he gathers up courage to prove that he is not a coward and let go of his old self. Incumbent protection gerrymandering, also known as â€Å"bipartisan gerrymandering†, happens when the people in-charge of drawing the district lines assure that each political party maintains their control on each of the district where they are already dominant. This ensures that the division of the state is done in a way that it upholds partisan status quo. When the time of redistricting came in California, just after the 2000 census, there was a scuffle between democrats and republicans. At that time the state democrats were in control of the governors mansion and the state legislature. California law permits the party in control to oversee the redistricting process for state legislature and the state congressional delegation. The republicans replied by threatening to accelerate the balloting which left the entire redistricting process to an uncertain vote. They also threatened litigation that pushed the matter into court and thus lead into the state supreme court, which already had six republicans and one democratic appointee, to redistrict. This led to a truce and had created an example of how effective and democratic the process of redistricting can become, even during a fight. Redistricting has been used to eliminate incumbent as well. Just like the democrats were in control of the redistricting in California, the republicans were in control of the redistricting in Virginia. Democratic minority leader Richard Cranwell was targeted by the republicans which made him draw district lines through his neighborhood and put his house into the district of his friend and colleague Chip Woodrum. This led not only to an ethical dilemma for Richard Cranwell, because Woodrum was his friend, but also to an impossible winning situation because the resulting district after redistricting was dominated by Woodrum support. Hence he opted to not run for reelection in 2001. Redistricting has been known to achieve the dilution of minority votes as well. In 2003, Texas legislature drew district lines and the process itself was fought upon severely. Democratic state legislatures which were in minority left and went to Oklahoma and New Mexico in order to prevent state legislatures meetings. In return, Tom DeLay, at that time federal house majority leader, had created an issue with the opposition for using FAA to track their planes. The congressional redistricting plan transferred over a hundred thousand Latino voters from district 23 to 25, this was to protect one incumbent. This act of minority vote dilution was done because that particular incumbent lost all support from Latinos ever since 96’. This was resolved in the supreme court and Texas district 23 was redistricted and fairly divided. Redistricting often leads to closely knit communities being split. In the racial unrest of 92’, Los Angeles had suffered huge damage losses which amounts up to a billion dollars. Majority of that damage was sustained by the small businesses of Korean and Asian communities. When the communities collectively took the matter of cleanup and recovery to their local officials, they were told that the area was in another district. Turns out that the redistricting had split the Korean town. The one-mile area was appallingly divided into four city council and five state assembly districts. This was a classic example of small communities suffering at the hand of redistricting. A total of 22 states, at times, give the authority of redistricting to â€Å"Commissions† which is entity separate from legislatures. These commissions are different in every state but in all situations the legislatures have a say. A total of four states use â€Å"Advisory Commission†, which advise the legislatures because they have the final say, to help with the redistricting process. Five states use â€Å"Backup Commission† and their method of using them vary. Whenever there is conflict in agreement between legislatures on redistricting process, these backup commissions are supposed to step in. Seven states use â€Å"Politician Commissions† in which legislators or elected officials sit and the legislature isn’t involved in the final say. Although many blame this horrendous event on the government’s use of Laissez Faire Economics, the real cause of disaster was the people. The population loss, starvation, and diseases that resulted from the Irish Potato Famine were self- inflicted by the Irish peoples’ upcoming decisions to the event.  ¬Ã‚ ¬Ã‚ ¬Ã‚ ¬Ã‚ ¬Ã‚ ¬Ã‚ ¬Ã‚ ¬Ã‚ ¬Ã‚ ¬Ã‚ ¬Ã‚ ¬Ireland was not of any interest to other countries, and in response these countries did not aid Ireland in its time of dire need. Countries had no concern in Ireland because it was an area of minimal development for industrialism (McCarthy 87). Also, Ireland had an absence of protection from invasions from other countries (McCarthy 87); one reason for this being that it is an island. Moreover, Ireland had an undeveloped amount of raw materials (McCarthy 87), which did not spark interest of speculation from others countries. Being able to come to America was the dream of many in the hopes they would be able to become wealthy.However, it was a rough start for my great-grandfather. The language barrier was a major obstacle and job options for foreigners were very limited; the only Job available to him was working at a Laundromat. 10 years later, my great-grandmother Joined him in the United States. Due to the difficulty of getting permission to come to the United States, and the fear of not being able to support them In the US, she was forced to leave her children behind in China: three daughters and one son.My great- grandmother was a ver y intelligent woman, and when she was finally able to contact her husband she settled in San Francisco, she was disappointed to discover him irking such a low paying Job. At her insistence, together, they decided to open a restaurant, and slowly their dreams of a new future began to emerge. My great- grandparent's worked tirelessly to keep their business running. Long hours were necessary to support not only themselves but also their children In China, who received the money they earned shipped overseas.Not wanting their kids to repeat to hard life they had, they were determined to give their children education. In this way, my grandmother was able to get college educated, which was very rare for women. In 1906, a major earthquake struck San Francisco. It sparked a series of fires that raged throughout the city for three days which left over half of San Franciscans population homeless but also destroyed office buildings that held the records and birth certificates of many Immigrants . With the loss of these records, officials asked immigrants to report their family's information.Like many other Chinese, my grandparent's slightly altered their family history. Instead to reporting they had three daughters and one son, they reported they had four sons. In the China, it was usually the men who came to the United States to work for a better living. By having extra birth certificates, my grandparent's were able to sell them to other Immigrants allowing them to come to America, which was very common at the time. Meanwhile, my grandparent's became married in China and using her college education, my grandmother became a professor.Then came the Cultural Revolution. This was an era in Chinese history where intellectuals were looked down upon and even persecuted. Since both my grandparent's were educated, when they gave birth to my mother and uncle they did want them to grow up being unfairly treated because of their Intellectual background. My grandparent's had hopes of moving to the United S Unnaturally, my great-grandparent's and already sold all to the birth certificates to other Chinese immigrants because they never intended to have their children come to America.In fact, they never planned to stay in America in the first place because they intended to move back to China after they saved up enough money. Unfortunately, my great-grandparent's never expected China to become communist country and by moving back they would be stripped of their freedom. At one point, my great-grandparent's missed their children so much that they wanted to see them, but because they were American citizens they could not set foot in China. Instead, my grandmother and my great-grandparent's decided to meet in Hong Kong.It was a huge risk for my grandmother to take because she was leaving China. During the Cultural Revolution, this was viewed as being unfaithful to Chinese government and the person could be subject to public humiliation. Red Guards Nevertheless, they we re reunited for a period of time. Knowing that there was the possibility that they would never see their daughter again after she returned to China, my great-grandparent's pleaded my grandmother to stay in Hong Kong. However, my grandmother knew by doing so she would be regarded as an anti- evolutionist, and her husband would be persecuted for her actions.Once again she was separated from her parent's. Years later, my mother knowing how much her mother wanted to be reunited with her parent's, studied hard to give her mother the chance to come to America. By succeeding academically, she was able to travel to the United States as a foreign college student at the age of 18. After graduating, she became a US citizen and filed the appropriate papers that allowed my grandmother to immigrate to the United States. At the age of 65, my grandmother's family was complete again.
